San Antonio Zoo

So I have a list of places I need to go before I leave San Antonio and the zoo was one of them.  Now, I’ve been to the zoo three times before but I’ve never been by myself – the last two times I went with my class on field trips and before that I went for a teacher workshop.  Since I had been so many times in the past, I was less interested in seeing everything and more interested in just seeing my favorite parts of the zoo.  Plus, I’ve never had the chance to visit the butterflies.. and I’ve been dying for the opportunity to take a picture of a butterfly!

Playing sweet and innocent Okay this little monkey was a sneaky little guy.  See how he has that sad look on his face?  Yeah like a second after I took this picture, he looked up and bared his teeth at a little girl near me.  Told ya, sneaky.

Closeup butterfly I was so amazed that this butterfly let me get this close.  Look at the details in the face… so insane!  (yeah the focus is off, try not to pay attention to that)

Purple butterfly Some other people next to me noticed this butterfly and, after they snapped their picture, graciously moved so that I could take my own pic.  The butterfly is actually more purple in real life, he didn’t photograph true to his color.  As soon as I got closer to him, he closed his wings… grr!

Flamingos This was very nearly my picture for today – I love all the pink here, and the way these two flamingos have their heads and necks kind of curved towards each other.  Their area, however, did NOT smell pleasant. As much as I would have liked to stick around and get a better shot… yuck!

Hi! What a colorful bird!  I had so much fun trying to get pictures of the birds… they weren’t interested in me as I didn’t have any nector… and they were squawking a lot, I have no idea why they were fussing so much!

Black and white... or white and black? Doesn’t he look sad?  Poor thing, I’m sure most of the animals were pretty miserable – the weather was so very hot, big surprise there.

I think he was posing for me... in fact I know it. I swear this elephant was posing for me.  I mean, look how he’s staring right at me!  Over to his left I think he had some food and he would take a bite, then turn to face me.. and as soon as I was done snapping my picture, he would turn away again!

168/365 - Even butterflies need their fruitAnd this is my picture for today.  The angle wasn’t intentional, I was just trying to navigate around some bushes and get a shot of an interesting butterfly… too many had their wings closed and from the outside, didn’t look as nice.  I do like how the wings look kind of interesting, and I like the angle, even if it was an accident!

I think when you go places by yourself, you enjoy them more, because you're doing and seeing exactly what *you* want and no one else!
  • Exactly! Just the way I like it!
  • That is a fantastic butterfly shot! We went to the zoo a couple of months ago and I took some photos but I'm getting a new camera soon and once I have it I'm going to drag my husband off to another zoo so I can take pictures!

  • Thanks! Oooh what kind of camera are you getting? That'd be fun!
  • Hey there!

Saw you over at 20sb so followed to see how you're doing with the blogging. I see you have it down well, and I love your pictures!

I've always wanted to go to the San Diego zoo, but beings as though I'm alllll the way over here in New Jersey its not exactly the zoo around the corner.
  • Aw thanks! And oooh yes I've heard great things about the San Diego zoo! I also heard it was expensive though, which stinks! It'd still be fun to go though!

This is by far my favorite post!! I love animals & I love the zoo. So many great pics, but my favorite is the zebra. I have always loved zebra's & if I could be an animal for a day, I would want to be a zebra. I love their black & white stripes!! Thanks for sharing your experience with us!!
  • Aw yay glad you liked it! I like zebras too, although I think I like giraffes more. Oh wait, flamingos. Cuz they're pink. :)
  • What type of camera do you use?

  • Just a point and shoot - Olympus Stylus 840. I'm saving up for a fancier camera tho, but they are expensive!
  • I have a Canon Rebel XS. It's the lowest of the low end dSLRs. But for me, it gets the job done.

I posted two pictures on my blog that I took:

Click on them to make them bigger. They look much better bigger. And actually, they're both of weeds.

  • Oooh those pics are well done! I like them! Your camera does good work, as do you!
  • Aw thanks! Those were the first pictures I took with it. I was so excited when I got it!

Those are great shots. Good on you for doing it in the heat. That bird looks like one of the lorikeets that come to my verandah. They get noisy at feeding time, which is usually around 8am and 4pm, but I guess in a zoo situation it'd be whenever there's food to be had. They're hardly ever alone, so when they talk to each other it gets noisy very quickly.
I don't like it when animals look sad in a zoo. You know, zebras and ephelants locked up in a little fenced paddock.
    Great flutterby shots!
I might post a zoo pic tonight. I was lucky enough to go to the Weribee Zoo near Melbourne a couple of years ago. And I had a zoom lens. :)
    Thanks for sharing! :)
  • Well yeah these birds get fed pretty much all the time, since they sell nector.

Oooh I want to see zoo pics!
  • Love the butterfly pictures! This is my favorite butterfly capture I ever snapped:

That was up on Mackinac Island in Michigan. I've got some other butterfly shots on my Flickr from when we were in Costa Rica as well. Butterflies are sooo fun to photograph.

  • Yeah okay that butterfly pic was pretty sweet. Kind of puts mine to shame.

So fun to photograph... but so hard! Some of them don't stop moving!
  • Sorry about the link in the comment. Not sure why it popped up - I'll diasble the feature next time.
  • Why would you disable it? Isn't that the point of the comment luv feature?
  • I've always wanted to go to a zoo with a nice zoom lens, but haven't done it yet.

Looks like you took a full advantage of it - love the photos. Flamingos I think is my favorite.

  • Do you have a zoom lens? That would be my DREAM, to go to the zoo with a zoom lens. My point and shoot only has a 5x zoom, which is decent, but when the animals are waaaaaay in the back (like the lions and tiger), it's hard..

Dont get complacent with the zoom you have on your camera! Those little p&s cameras usually have a very good amount of range on them (though that is a lot easier to do with the size of the sensor and the lenses). Telephoto lenses get VERY pricey for SLRs, even the okay ones. To pimp Olympus some more, they have some two lens kits that will cover you from 14-150mm (which is an equivalent focal length of 28-300mm!), and the kit lenses are top notch. They are pretty affordable as well!

I actually plan on going to the Cleveland Zoo at some point this summer since I do have a telephoto lens now. I would probably do the same thing as you and go by myself so I can see what I want to see!
  • Yeah my p&s; does have decent zoom... but think of the potential!

Can't wait to see what pictures you come up with. I definitely recommend going to the zoo by yourself... more freeing that way! :o)
