Playing tourist, while I still can…

After today I only have 5 full days left in San Antonio, so I figured I’d better tackle the “to photograph” items on my list.  I accidentally did 2 today… I went to Hemisfair Park to take pictures of the Tower of the Americas, but I also wandered around and managed to find myself at the original portion of the Riverwalk.

Now I only have a few things left on my list.  I’m not sure if I want to go to the Alamo… I’ve been there a dozen times before in the past, plus these days it’s so overrun with tourists, I probably wouldn’t get a good shot.  I might go try to find the other 2 missions, maybe… and I’m debating going back to the new Museum Reach part of the Riverwalk.  Decisions, decisions… do you have any thoughts?

Anyway… picture & story time!

Tower of the Americas Incidentally, 5 years ago I took a similar picture of the tower.  Something about the clouds and the tree branches surrounding the tower makes me happy.  Anyway, this ended up being my picture for today.

The Tower of the Americas The Tower of the Americas is TALL so it’s hard to get a shot with the whole tower in the frame.  It took a lot of wandering around to get this shot.  Plus I kind of like the person in the front, it helps you get the perspective of how tall it really is.  I didn’t pay the $10 to go up the tower though… I’ve been up there before, and I’m not about to pay $10 to do it again!

P6200349 Okay, in hindsight, I recognize what a poorly composed shot this is.  I’m really convinced that I was just caught up with how lovely the reflection was.

Part of the original riverwalkThe original part of the Riverwalk… a lot more shaded.

Church?I really like the composition of this shot, not sure what church that is in the background though.

P6200363 I’d like this picture better if the sky weren’t so blown out.  In almost every other picture the sky looks nice.. grr.  Anyway, I like the colorful umbrellas in front of the restaurant, along with the boat.

When tour guides have a sense of humor...And I’ll leave you with this picture.  Looks pretty bad, right?  Poorly composed, awkward… but  it has a great story behind it.  You see, I was framing a shot of a boat, with the bridge in the background.  As I’m taking a shot, I hear the tour guide (driving the boat) saying, “And over there you see a girl with a pink camera taking a picture.  Let’s all wave to her” (I’m paraphrasing, of course).

Anyway, he says that as I’m mid-button press and it took me a while to recover from the shot, re-frame the shot, and stop laughing.  Lol. I was too busy being completely caught off guard to think about actually composing this shot nicely.  Bummer I wasn’t fast enough/that he caught me mid-button press… at one point they were ALL waving at me… now only some of them are.

But it still makes me smile. :)

  • You know I love all your photography! I especially like the one with the reflection off the water so serene. As I replied on my blog to your post, I am not the best photographer, but I admire yours because you share that love for it like I do, and I think even when you say it's not the best, I see the art and beauty in it.

My fiance thinks I am nuts cause I see things and point out what an awesome picture something would be (at least while I am waiting for my camera) and he just doesn't get it.

  • Aw thanks. And I think that's the great thing about photographers like you - finding things that people wouldn't ordinarily consider pictures and actually making them a picture. I'm not that great at it still, usually I just photograph the obvious things, but I hope to get better at it. One day...

  • Well just leaving San Antonio... I'll definitely have to be taking pictures of Houston, although I don't think Houston is pretty. Thanks for writing here! :)

Another great adventure full of great pictures. Thanks for once again sharing with us.
  • Thanks for looking! :o)
  • Where do your parents live? How far is that from San Antonio?

The reflection is quite nice though. I'd probably become quite focused on it too

  • They live in Houston, which is a 3 hour drive (which I HATE driving, ugh).

I think you chose the right image for today. The comp is perfect.

My vote is to visit the mission(s). But leave early and pay a quick stop at The Alamo before the throngs arrive.
  • Thank you! And that might be a good idea. Although we'll see if I have time, I've just realized how much cleaning and packing there is to do before Friday. Yuck.
  • That last picture is AWESOME! Id be embarassed if that happened to me though.
  • Ha ha yeah I was a bit embarassed but people on those boats tend to wave at everyone just to begin with (and whenever I've been on the boat, I've waved) so it wasn't too bad!
  • That is an adorable story with that last picture! I would have been laughing too. :) Did you wave back?

Is the Alamo on the drive to either of the missions? Maybe just take a shot from outside... just to check the block? I mean, it's a cool site if people aren't in the way. Mostly I think it's a history buff place. From what I remember there wasn't that much to see there except old uniforms and weapons. lol

Funny... the picture of the reflection I was all "Oooh, I really like this" and then I read about how poor the picture is. Ha ha. Oh well.
  • Umm, I think I smiled and laughed. I'm not sure, it all happened so fast, hence the horrible picture!

No, the Alamo isn't on the way. And the problem with the Alamo is parking... it's in the middle of downtown, parking costs $7. I dunno, we'll see if I have time on Tuesday. I need to start cleaning and packing today. Blegh. Oh but you're right, there isn't much to see. I should know, I've been at least a dozen times since I was a kid.
