Day 1, down. 179 days to go

I could be wrong, there might be less than 180 days at this school. I forget.

Anyway today was the first day of school and it went pretty well. I had a hard time sleeping because I was stressing over what I was supposed to do on the first day, but when I got my class in their seats, something kicked in and I just knew what to do and say. Never had that happen before, maybe it is something that comes from this being my 5th year teaching.

Anyway the kids were pretty good, but kids are usually on their best behavior for the first few days so we’ll see how the week goes. I do have a few that aren’t used to being in school or perhaps aren’t used to following directions, and I can tell they are going to be tiring. Luckily it’s only a few so far. So far.

Anyway I kind of am excited about this class. They seem more advanced than my last class, except for one or two. (actually there is one that is very low, i’m concerned already). They also seem more interested in learning and all about positive praise, rather than what treats they could receive, which might not seem like a big difference but it really is.

More than that, I felt good about myself. Last year I felt that I was too tough, too strict on my kids but then again, I sort of had to be with that group. Today I felt like I was the right balance between strict and fun and I felt that my kids walked away with a good feeling about me.

Anyway, here’s hoping it’s a great rest of the year!

I'm glad your first day went well! I hope you're second day is going as smoothly. That's awesome that your teacher-skills just kicked in like that!
  • Yay! I am happy your first day went well. I too had one student I am already concerned about. We did an intro activity and she couldn't even speak enough English to introduce herself! It might be wrong, but I am hoping she just transfers to another class. Perhaps an elective that is more physical like dance, vs the need for English in Creative Writing.
