Recovery

Been absent for a few days because my heart, soul and all my effort has been going into recovering my poor iPhone.  I did something wrong (I’m sure it was some option I shouldn’t have checked but did when I was testing out Mobile Me) and Wednesday night all my contacts and calendar disappeared.  All.  It was horribly tragic, and I tried to use the backup that iTunes automatically saves for me, but I think everything got erased, and then when I plugged in my iPhone, iTunes backed up my now-erased iPhone.  So the backup was useless.

Anyway, about 3 and a half weeks ago I caved in and upgraded my iPhone from the 16gb to the 32gb… and apparently there was a separate backup for the 16gb that I no longer have.  So I managed to recover most everything from that backup, but there was still a 3 and a half week gap worth of things I couldn’t recover.  I was up 2 late nights in a row trying to sort everything out and I am now completely exhausted.

I have also now learned the error of my ways, in relying on iTunes as my only means of backup, since when it backups up the iPhone, it erases the previous backup.  One lone backup is no bueno.  So I’ve spent time searching for alternative means of saving my data.  I now have my iPhone calendar synced to my google calendar (I never used google calendar before but I LIVE off my iPhone calendar so I need something to make sure I’m safe if something happens to it), and my contacts are now synced to my Windows Address Book on my PC and through an app called iDrive Lite (free and web based).

I feel a little bit better about any future crashes… but it feels like it’s not enough.  There should be an easier way, and multiple ways, to save data, all my data… when I reverted to the old backup, I lost Notes that I had saved, information on applications, general phone settings, etc.  Yes, Mobile Me exists.. but it’s primarily for contacts and calendar (and photos) and it’s $99/year.  Plus it doesn’t feel PC friendly (I don’t use Outlook), although if I ever end up with my Macbook, I might change my mind and shell out the big bucks… having iCal and being able to sync to it would rock my world. Maybe I was spoiled by my Blackberry, which let me make as many backups as I wanted… although, it never synced automatically (and I rarely ever had the need to plug my Blackberry into my computer) and as a result, I was lazy about syncing.

Anyway I guess all that is to say… phew.  This iPhone can be quite the trouble maker.  No worries, still the best phone in the world and I will love it til its’ dying day (and will love it even more in 2 weeks, when MMS finally rolls out), but sheesh.  I would have thought a few iPhone geeks out there would have made it easier to sync *everything*.

  • So sorry about your iphone :( It's so weird that you lost all your stuff. I've switched iphones twice and never had a problem, but I will agree that the steps you have to follow must be done in a very specific order since itunes automatically creates a new backup each time you sync the phone. Apple offers great student/teacher discounts if you are wanting a macbook!
  • So sorry that your phone crashed... that's awful! I'm old school--I still like to have a big ol' agenda to keep me organized.
  • i feel with you. two years ago i wanted to make an back-up. in this moment my mac and the the extern-hard-drive contacted i heard a bang like a short circuit.

over, silence. nothing worked. the mac was dead and with him 4000 photos, all the other data and programs. i lost everything. that was a feeling you comes home and someone has robbed you.

the mac-hard-drive could not be saved.
  • you don't have a mac, do you?

the iphone not only creates a system backup file in itunes, but it also syncs with your address book and (if you so choose) ical on your computer. then when you plug in again to sync, if the phone is empty for whatever reason, it asks you "hey, are you *sure* you want to sync this stuff? it looks bogus!"

mac + itunes + iphone = no issues

... well, except for my phone randomly locking up this afternoon. i had to force reset it to get her working again. it was way strange.
  • I so wish I had a Mac. You have no idea, I've been itching for one for the past year and the itch has gotten a bit more furious as the year has gone, especially after getting my iPhone.

Only thing is that I have no money whatsoever, plus I'm supposed to be saving up for my dSLR. But I really want a MacBook. Really really really. Siiiigh.
  • i have a mac-book. read my commend. you can see, a mac-book does not have to be the safest one.
