So I’ve been in another world…

A world where vampires, werewolves, and other magically creatures reside.  Obviously, I’ve been reading.  A lot.  So much so that I keep neglecting everything else… oops.

I mentioned a while back that I’ve started to read books on my iPhone and the first book I started reading was a book Oprah was offering as a free download – Let The Great World Spin by Colum McCcann.  But I was having a heck of a time reading it.  At times it would get interesting, most of the time I was bored… and the book kept changing characters and scenes to the point that *just* when I started getting to like a character, I was dropped into a new character’s world and I would have a hard time adjusting.

So I decided to take a break from that book and started reading the Sookie books… and I finished book 1 within 2 days.  The realization?  It wasn’t the iPhone that was making it hard for me to read the book, it was *the book* that was making it hard for me to read it.  Even though I very rarely stop reading books without finishing them, I just had to.  And I haven’t looked back.  I’ve now completed the first 4 Sookie books within a little over a week.  It’s just so handy to pick up my phone and read from it.  In fact, a little too handy.. 4 books in 9 days?  I know they are pretty short books, but still… that’s a lot of reading!

Oh and yes, I do miss the feeling of a new book, the smell, the crisp, untouched pages… being able to read in the tub (although I haven’t actually taken a bubble bath in ages, sadly).  But I don’t miss hardcover books (too awkward to hold), I don’t miss the expensive costs ($9.99 for a brand new e-book version of The Lost Symbol, which just came out on Tuesday?  Yes please!), and I do enjoy having a variety of books at my reach without the extra space.

Now the only thing I have to worry about is restraining myself – even though ebooks are cheaper, I’m consuming them waaaay too fast.  Yikes.  Must slow down.

  • I loved the Sookie books! I've contemplated getting a ereader - but reading on the phone....? Just checking blog posts and news articles gets annoying after four paragraphs - I can't imagine reading an entire book that way. Of course, it would make my commute much lighter....
  • I LOVE holding and smelling a new (and old) book. I love the feel of the pages, the cover and the sounds it makes when you turn the page.

I was in a used/local bookstore during my visit to Minneapolis yesterday and I was seriously drooling at all the pretty books. I even found the Loeb Classical Library edition of Virgil's Aeneid for cheap! I grabbed them immediately. http://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog/L063N.html

I'm glad you're liking it. I get teased a lot because I carry around books with me, but I don't think I would if I carried them in an electronic format. That said, I like the physical aspects and the ability to scribble in the margins, etc!
  • I'm interested to hear that you're enjoying reading on your iphone - I've always thought I would hate not having an actual book in my hands. Maybe I'll give it a go sometime.
  • Can anyone really get angry at you for reading? Hope not because that would be a shame. I'm glad to hear that you've found a new way to get the books you want. As for consuming books way too fast, it only gives you more time for all the other amazing books out there that you have yet to read (or reread). Though going through the books so fast may take a chunk out of the pocket book...
