‘Tis the Season…

Okay, no it’s not the season… well, the season of Autumn, I suppose, but that’s not what I have in my mind.  Thanks to all the stores putting out their decorations early, I am now in the holiday season mindset.  I can’t seem to shake it.  Plus the weather has been unseasonably cool and today it was a bit breezy, chilly and the sky was gray, like someone threw a blanket over the city – felt like winter.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am well aware that winter is 3 months away.  Halloween is the closest event, but I consider Halloween kinda lame.  I mean, I like the decorations – black cats, pumpkins, all that jazz… but it’s not like I can put any of it up at school.  We can’t really bring up Halloween in the classroom, and anything Halloween-related is not allowed.  But, like I said, I’m not that into Halloween so it’s okay… although it’s my dad’s birthday so I’m sure he wouldn’t like to hear that.

After that we have Thanksgiving.  Eh.  Now, I *am* thankful for the 3 days off of work I’m granted, although last year at my old school we received the full week off and that was much better.  My mom *does* make a delicious meal: turkey, roast potatoes, cranberry sauce, sweet potato pie… mmmmm.  But other than that, the decorations aren’t that great and I’m just ready for the main event.

The main event being, of course, Christmas.  I love Christmas, everything about it. I own nearly every Christmas-related DVD, from Rudolph to Frosty to The Polar Express, and have always enjoyed watching them in class with my students (hopefully this year I’ll be allowed to do the same).  I love reading the books, I’ve collected quite a variety and they’re so much fun to read.  I love the music and I like to play different Christmas songs while the kids are working, or even while I’m driving… with my favorite being, of course, the soundtrack to “A Charlie Brown Christmas”.  I love the decorations around the city:  Christmas lights everywhere, wreaths and tinsel.  Plus Christmas just opens itself up to the cutest arts & crafts projects to do with my students, and my classroom always ends up festively decorated.  Oh and the 2 weeks of vacation time that I get always makes me happy.  But my favorite part of Christmas is digging through my Christmas box… my giant storage tub filled with decorations that I’ve collected over the years.  Unwrapping everything is a real treat, as I always forget what I’ve collected, and I love going through it all – the candle holders shaped like snowmen, the snow globes, the ornaments.  I always decorate the day after Thanksgiving and take everything down New Year’s Eve.  My apartment has always been adorably festive… and right now I’m a bit sad that my stuff is in storage.  This year won’t be the same.   But it’s still Christmas.  Still so many possibilities.

So that’s where my head is these days… looking forward 3 months (as of tomorrow, 3 months to the day) to Christmas.  I have a long way to go.  But knowing the shops, it won’t be long before Christmas music starts up.  And I just can’t wait!

  • I love Christmas in the sense of what the holiday is about. I love the time off work, I love the huge family get togethers. I hate the music, I hate the movies, the tv shows, and all that hoopla. Okay, I don't hate the movies too much but I hate the music...A lot.

Canadian Thanksgiving is in October, before Halloween. So we move straight from Halloween to Christmas music, Christmas decorations, and all that stuff. I'm not fond of it. It drives me insane!

I must admit that the thought of Christmas not being too far away makes me freeze up a bit. There's just SO much going on this fall, so the thought of barreling through all of it gives me a bit of anxiety. To be honest, I'd rather not think about it. This might the first year that I wasn't all out excited about it...I guess it's cuz I'm not in school anymore!
  • at my hometown we have a big store which every seasons changed his range of goods. at christmas-time the whole store is over and over full with chrismas-stuff - from the ceiling to the floor. you are not able to see any other things in it. only chrismas, chrismas, chrismas.

this store is cult. many people form other towns and neighbor-country's comes up to buy their decorations. the prices are very cheap so it's worth, to drive all the way to buy at this store.
  • You can't put up Halloween decorations....but you can put up Christmas ones?

I love having a place decorated for both holidays (and sometimes secretly listen to Christmas music in the summer). Halloween is a blast of youthful nostalgia while Christmas is just all warm and fuzzy and yummy.
  • Oh I'm so with you on this one - I am trying so hard not to be excited about Christmas already, I love it! My work sends out Christmas hampers to the people we've visited throughout the year and as there are so many we will be starting in November - so I figure its only really a month and a bit to wait!
