Happiness.

Let me start by saying that today was an amazing day.  Truly awesome.  And, luckily for the blog, I have pictures of most all of it.  Aren’t cameras wonderful?

The big thing around town, of course, was that it was supposed to snow. They had been predicting this for the past week but I didn’t believe it.  All morning I would peer through the door window (which has a perfect view down a small hallway to the outside doors), hoping to see snow.  Nothing.  Then all of a sudden I heard a commotion outside.  The middle schoolers, while switching classes, saw the snow and basically let everyone nearby know with their shouts of excitement.  The kinder and first grade teachers made the decision to take the kids out.  It was barely snowing though, more like flurries and rain (nothing showed up in the pics).  And it was *cold*.  But the kids loved it.  We took them back in after about 5 minutes, then an announcement was made over the loud speaker “please do not take your students outside – this is instructional time.”

Blegh.  Way harsh.  I remember when it snowed when I was in 4th grade and my teacher let us go outside… it was a big deal.  And we don’t get snow here often, definitely not on a regular basis.  I think I can count on one hand how many times I’ve seen snow here. And of those times, the snow has actually stuck to the ground once. For like an hour. And it was barely a quarter of an inch, if that.

Anyway, a few hours later a teacher let me know that the snow  was *really* coming down and oh wow, it was beautiful.  So amazing.  I gazed from my classroom door wistfully while other teachers took their kids out (it was their recess time so it was legit) and then the assistant principal came by.  I asked to take the kids out and he said yes. Woohoo!

snow bushesIt was actually sticking!  Covering the roofs in the background too. :)

snow kid My kids were so excited, they could hardly stand still.  Or they were just cold… Either way, I wish this picture was in better focus but ah well…

snow blurryAccidentally got snow on my lens and it gave it this blurry effect until I was able to wipe it off.  I kinda dig it, even if it probably wasn’t that good for the camera.

So that was exciting.  Then, when the kids went to Music, I happened to glance at the UPS tracking info on the *big purchase*… and it says it was DELIVERED.  Say what?!  It wasn’t supposed to arrive til Monday and last I heard it was in Mesquite (about 5 hours away) yesterday afternoon.  I had secretly hoped it would arrive today but I didn’t want to hold my breath.   I called my dad and he said that yes, they left it at the door (even tho it was signature required) but he wanted me to open it.  So I had to anxiously await to get home.

But first I had to wipe snow from my car:

snow car I’m telling you, we never get this much snow.  Ever.

And then I got home, opened up the package and… voila.  Nikon D90.  Sooo beautiful.

Check me out!!! We’re in love already.

Bay's not sure about the new cam Bay is going to get awfully tired of seeing a camera in her face.  She better get used to it.

Then I remembered that I needed a 24 Days of Christmas picture.  Hmmm…

[4/24] presents definitely say Wow this pose feels familiar.

So that was my huge day.  Oh yeah, and something I had been wanting to buy online (for the camera) but had been out of stock finally got back in stock so I was able to order it – but I’ll save that story for when it gets here. :)  I’ll admit, all the pictures that I took with the new cam are unedited, I haven’t gotten that far yet. I also haven’t gotten very far into reading the manual or learning how much of this works.  But I have all weekend.  And, you know, after that too.

I will also admit that I’m going to miss taking macros (close up pictures).  This lens doesn’t do that, as far as I know.  Gotta save up for a new lens… guess that’s my next project!  Okay, okay, I’ll be happy with what I have right now.  How can I not be… I got my new camera!!

  • Thanks! And fun! :)
  • Yay, new camera!! Also, I think it's fun how excited you all are about snow. I guess I take it for granted since we get some every winter.
  • You're lucky, we rarely get snow. I want more!
  • Snow! HOORAY!

and an early arrival - how awesome. Enjoy!
  • Thanks!

  • LOVE the snow covered munchkin pic. L-O-V-E. Love the composition. Love everything.

Yay for snow. I hope it snows here tonight!
  • Thanks! I wish the picture were crisper but otherwise, I love it too.

    So didja get snow?!
  • I did!! Only about an inch and a half, but it's still snowed, and I am SO content with that. Now, I want more. ^.^

    Well done Ray. :)
Congrats on the arrival of the big purchase.
How incredibly dictatorial to not allow to go play in the snow because it's teaching time.
About the macro shots, remember, get close-up filters for now, they're cheap, but they work. A macro lens is just too expensive to get for now. All my macro pics are taken with a close-up filter.
Nice 24 pic, by the way. :)
And I'm jealous about the camera and the snow. :)
  • Hee hee thanks. :)

Yeah very dictatorial. Although we think they weren't upset with the elementary kids, it was the middle and high school kids that were sneaking out without telling anyone that were the reason. We think.

Okay will remember close-up filters. Are there different kinds? And I found a macro lens that is only about $100... :)
  • Quave
Get the filters and put the $100 towards a good lens or a new computer. (A Mac thingy if you must) :)
  • Yippie! :) I'm so happy that you had a great day. Snow in Texas is obviously a huge deal. ALL of my friends facebook statuses today were about the cold and the snow and they were so excited. I lived there for 14 years and I think it snowed like once or twice, three times if I consider flurries that melted before they hit the ground.

I love the picture of the snow flake on one of your students pictures, I was hoping that you'd take a picture like that. Those types always make me smile. :)

Congrats on the big purchase! Everyone around me is getting big fancy cameras..I personally don't want a camera that can't fit into the back pocket of my jeans. The picture of you with the camera and bow is too cute!

    Merry Xmas to you!
  • Ha ha, yeah all my friends facebook statuses were about snow too! It's so very exciting! And now the weather is supposed to warm back up for a while (well, 60s) so I guess no snow for a long time...

Yeah I hear ya about not wanting a big camera. I'm still gonna keep my point & shoot camera in my purse, for daily use. But this new cam can do so much more and I'm excited to use it, especially when I travel next year!
  • Wooooot!!! I am so happy that you finally got your DSLR and a Nikon D90 at that! You will love it once you start using all the different settings. It took me about 3 months or so to truly know the camera and even now I learn new things all the time. It's awesome though. I am so looking forward to seeing your pics evolve with this camera. That being said, the close up snow picture of the kid's face is awesome! See? You are already a photographer, now the D90 will just enhance the natural talent you have. Congrats again!!! :)
  • "You will love it once you start using all the different settings."

Yup, I'm sure I will. I just hope I figure out some of them soon, it's stressing me out already. It's like I don't know how to take a picture!!
  • justtheashes
Doesnt take macros? Pffft. Totally will. Ive taken loads of macros with my kit lens, and your kit lens looks a million times better.
  • Okay I just haven't figured out how. It's hard!!
  • Lucy
I'm sure you will pick it up quickly, have fun!
  • Ha I hope so... and will do!
  • I still have not read my manual. Playing is definitely the best way to learn. And you'll be surprised with what that kit lens can do! It's pretty versatile. I am sure you get get some pretty nice macros (but I am also sure a dedicated macro lens would take them even better...lol). Anyway, have fun. I am sooooo happy to see you back in action with that camera and to see what you do. Yipee!!!
  • I usually try to read manuals but this one has so much that it's overwhelming.

If you can teach me how to do macros, I will love you forever. There are a few pics that I have in mind for the Christmas project and I'd hate to have to go back to the p&s because I couldn't figure out how to do it with the nice new camera.
  • As I said on flickr, don't bog yourself down with the manual right off the bat. Play first. You learn a lot that way!
  • Plus playing is more fun! :)
  • Congratulations! I can't wait to see what you come up with. Also, I'm jealous. It's looking like I won't be getting mine for at least another year or so...
  • Awww, I'm sorry to hear that. Although don't be too jealous, I'm feeling completely overwhelmed and lost by the new camera - like I don't know how to take pictures anymore!
  • TotallyHeather
I'm so excited for you! I love the snow pictures. I love your new camera. And I think Bay looks so cute.

Eeee! What an exciting day for you!
  • Hee hee, thanks! :)
