Wish, wish, wishing

Okay, I have to be honest… the whole Christmas generosity, tis the season to GIVE part is lost on me.  I love presents.  And my wish list keeps growing, dangnabit.  I blame the camera.  Ever since she (yes, my camera is a girl and her name is Lola, what? :p) came into my life, she just made me WANT things.  Like a spare battery, because I’m just the type of person to go out and have my battery die on me -  I’ve done it before.  Oh and a 50mm lens, I’ve been told I need it and now I definitely want one.  Mmm, think of the possiblities  (Yes I know I could get extension tubes but I want the lens so shhh!)  And this wristlet strap, because even tho I have a neck strap coming my way, I’m still used to my point & shoot and think maybe I’d like the wristlet better?  I also kind of want a tripod but not really just yet, I think I’ll wait til I get back into my own apartment before going for it…  And the movie Ballerina, because… okay, I’ll admit, that’s not camera related.  I just remembered I wanted it.  Do you think it’s too late to revise my Christmas wish list? :)

Feel free to try to talk me out of my camera-related wish list items.  *Try* being the key word.  Don’t worry, I’m not about to go out and buy all these things right now.  I may spring for the spare battery because that feels like a purchase I could use right away but the rest I’ll save for when I randomly have extra money.  Or I can add it to my birthday wishlist. :)

Anyways…. *closes the Amazon window, puts away the wallet*…. two mini notes before I get to today’s picture.  #1… My dad started his new job today. You may remember (probably not)that my dad got laid off a few months ago. It was something he saw coming and he was financially prepared to be out of work for a while, but it was nice that he got a job earlier than expected.  Oh and #2… Bay got a collar today.  Complete with bell.  Surprisingly it doesn’t bother her but my parent’s feel like I’m torturing her.  Lol!

Okay my 24 Days of Christmas picture.  First of all let me see, it’s rough trying to take pictures in the evening.  I mean,  at least we decorated yesterday so there’s decorations to take pictures of… but the lighting by the time I get home sucks.  Which = blurry pictures.  Maybe I do need a tripod.  Anyway, I kind of am pleased with how the picture turned out, however I don’t like that the right corner of the sign isn’t in focus.  A setting I should have changed?

[7/24] Season's GreetingsMaybe THIS could have been my Christmas card. :)

I’d like to think I’m trying though.  I mean, maybe.  Although I guess I should have tried harder and tried to get the whole thing in focus?  I’m really working hard though!

You need to check out Photojojo.com - they have some really cool accessories in their shop and some good tips . . .
  • Oooh thanks!

About the strap thing, I rather have the standard strap that you can put around your neck, or over your shoulder or diagonally across.
And yep, no need for brand batteries, as long as they fit.
    Movies, who needs movies.
The lens... well... when's your birthday? Or quick, get a Valentine! :) ... a rich one!
  • Movies are fun! And... my birthday is in February. You can start saving up for the lens then. Plenty of time.
  • Lola is my best friend's name, so I heartily approve!
  • That is such an awesome name!

I greatly enjoy opening presents Christmas morning, but I'm more of a giver. I get myself in trouble more often than not financially for giving too much!
  • Ha I've done that before! Many a boyfriend have made me broke from Christmas!
  • I want a 50mm lens too! I want the Nikon 1.4 one but, alas, I don't think it's happening anytime soon. I can't talk you out of any of your camera purchases, except maybe the wrist strap. I don't see that working for a camera as large as the D90. I think you might end up hitting it on something. Other than that, wish away!

Oh and I sort of like the pic being slightly out of focus in the corner, but then again I am big on that sort of thing.
  • The 1.4 one is the really expensive one right? Why must we have such expensive taste in things?!

I think I may end up hitting the camera on something regardless, it's so big and I'm so clumsy. Yikes.

    Oh and thanks. :D
  • Lovely pic! And congrats to your dad on finding a job - my dad just got laid off this week, too - not fun :(

Can I see the little bell collar? :)
  • Aw sorry to hear about your dad. :(

Here's Bay's collar: http://www.twitpic.com/sr2vl the bell is on the other side, it's pink too. There was a cute red and snowflakes one but I wasn't sure it was breakaway and I wanted to make sure I got a breakaway collar, ya know?
  • Oh so pretty! Hope she likes it :)
  • My only concern with the wristlet strap would be the weight of your camera with the lens. I'm sure you've noticed that it's a lot heavier than your p-a-s was...so just hanging it from your wrist is probably not terribly comfortable.

Also, with the neck strap, there are tricks you can pull with wrapping it around your wrist to help with stability as you shoot.
  • Yeah but I feel SO awkward dangling the camera around the neck. Mainly because it juts out and I KNOW I'm gonna run into a wall with it. Plus I feel touristy. Do you wear it around your neck like that?
  • I actually usually wear it slung over my shoulder like a handbag. Or around my neck.
  • I've been doing that and I still worry about running into things with it. Have I mentioned I'm clumsy?

That being said, it survived Friday evening in a crowded room full of people. So maybe it's tough.
  • I think that it's already been explained pretty well on the Flickr page, but the reason you have only part of the sign in focus is due to the really shallow focal plane - as you might recall from what I mentioned before, when you shoot racked-out with a wide aperture, your focal plane is really tiny. So even being a quarter of an inch closer (or further) from the camera from that focal plane will put something out of focus.
  • Dang racked-out wide aperture. :oD
  • Love the picture! Very festive.
  • Thanks!

I bought spare batteries from sterlingtek.com. Non-proprietary but much less cost, too. Save up and get a good tripod - you'll loooooove being able to shoot at night. Another good accessory that really helps in a polarizing filter. Especially as you live in Texas, and need to cut glare and increase contrast. A photo friend gave me a good idea to buy a step-down ring so I can use a larger diameter filter on a smaller diameter lens.

It's an addiction, I tell ya.........
  • Thanks for the link, I'll check them out.

I got a UV filter cuz my dad said I needed one. A polarizing filter huh? Will google. And will have to google a step-down ring too.

Yeah my dad warned me it was an addiction but I didn't believe him.
  • Carol is bang-on. Don't buy name brand batteries, unless you like donating money to Nikon (or in my case Canon). It's almost criminal how much more spendy the "official" batteries are.
  • Well but then at least you know the battery is gonna work. Too often you get the knock off brands that aren't as good.
  • yeah, but you'll find that in the case of dSLR batteries, there are a LOT of reviews. You can safely buy off-brand if 95% of the photographers out there are buying them too. I got news for you. Even the pros don't buy Canon or Nikon brand batteries :)
  • I'm with Heather on this one. I think that today's picture would make an excellent greeting card. It's so festive and adorable. I love the colours. Man I feel bad for not decorating more but I'm not a huge festive person.

I think for now the only MUST HAVE from your camera wish list is the spare battery. They die so quickly, you MUST get one!
  • Aw thanks. And yeah I'm not feeling festive lately.
  • Ok I am sorry but I can not talk you out of that lens. The 50mm lens is amazing!!! It's my new walk around lens. Its on my camera 75% of the time. However the store talked me into a 35mm instead. A little more money, but due to the fact that our camera is not a "full frame" it acts like a true 50mm.

Anyway, I know how you feel about WANTING. Have I told you I already want to upgrade my d90? And after my workshop yesterday I want to upgrade even more. *sigh* maybe I need a dslr fund on my blog. lol.

Also, for your picture - what was your ISO set at? your f/stop? I would've probably bumped my ISO high...(maybe to 800 or 1000 even) and then used a higher f-stop (f 5ish). Also have you been using your focal points at all when you look through the lens?
  • Ha I probably should get used to the camera first before I start spending money on new lenses. Siiigh.

    Ummm... focal points?
  • Right on, about the 50mm being a necessity. And if you can get a 35mm, that's even better, since as mentioned...for those of us with crop sensor bodies, the 50mm is really like an 85mm.

I still love my 50mm though, because it's so damn fast.
  • I think at this point anything would make me happy. :p
  • TotallyHeather
I want to add Ballerina to my Christmas list too!

That would have made an adorable Christmas card!

And camera extras are so key! I would never try to talk you out of these things... But maybe that's because I'm a shopaholic and a bad influence of people on a budget... Like myself.
  • Ohh add it! I don't know why I love Ballerina so much but I do!

Yeah I'm a shopaholic too. Rawr.
