“Maybe this year will be better than the last…

“And it’s been a long December and there’s reason to believe maybe this year will be better than the last.” -Counting Crows, ‘A Long December’

Happy twenty-ten!! I’m very superstitious about certain things, and a new year is one of them.  I blame my mother, I think she passed along some of her superstitions about the day to me.  For example: I always clean New Year’s Eve, I don’t clean on New Year’s Day.  Plus it’s nice to welcome the new year tidy and neat.  I always pay my bills on New Year’s Eve, I don’t like to start the year paying out money.  I like to wear something new to start out the new year, hoping it means more things will come throughout the year.

My latest New Year’s superstition has been HOW I welcome the new year.  I’ve started feeling that how I spend the first few minutes of the year reflects how the rest of the year will go.  I can trace this theory all the way back to New Year’s 2007:

  • New Year’s 2007: Spent it downtown, with my then significant other, who was working.  Minutes after it turned midnight, I was making my way through the massive crowd and I got pushed off a curb by some random drunk chick and called a bitch.  Suffice it to say, the year did not go well.
  • New Year’s 2008: Spent it with a guy I was with at the time, just watching the local celebration on TV and enjoying champagne.  Year went well, dating him for a while and then another guy for the rest of the year.
  • New Year’s 2009: Spent it alone, with my cat. Rest of the year I was single.

(I also have a thing for even numbers, and I don’t like odd numbers… and 2007 and 2009 were odd and not great.  Coincidence?  I think not!)

Anyway, as a result of my theory, I decided I had to spend the first minutes of 2010 the way I wanted to spend the rest of the year.  While being snuggled up with a gorgeous man would be ideal… that wasn’t really an option. Sigh. (One day…)

So I went over to some friends’ house.  It was pretty tame – watching TV, playing wii, I left by like 12:15am… but I was with friends.  And I hope that is a reflection of how my year is gonna go (minus the leaving early bit)… I would like 2010 to be just basically me enjoying the company of friends.

And maybe a gorgeous  man (or two?).  :o)

I agree with this post completely! Last year (2009) spent New Year's with my family, I was pregnant at the time so my options were few :) However, I have to say the entire 2009 I spent with my family, and it proved that how you start the year is how you'll end it. Ironically enough I spent this New Years the same way ... because now my son is only 6 months old and who wants to babysit on New Years?! haha!

I hope your 2010 brings you plenty of time with your close friends! :)

I'm supersitious as well - but mainly about what I eat on New Years Day - except I didn't do it this year. But then again, I've been eating the same meal on NYD for 6yrs. and they haven't turned out to be the best years of my life . . . so maybe its a good thing I didn't . . .
  • I get this weird pressured feeling when the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve. It's like I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be doing, but I know I'm not doing it. WEIRD. I also feel this heaviness weigh upon me, like the people I'm with won't be with me long. Its really quite awful, but I still manage to have a good time. I guess that's some strange superstition, hm? Or mental instability. :P I think I'm just thankful for what I've got, and afraid of losing it.
  • I spent NYE 2007 alone, though I was in Topeka, KS, it was for work not by choice (considering the alternative was home in Austin). That being said, after getting over being in Topeka, I used that time to reflect. It was different, the first time I'd ever been alone on NYE. So I made the most of it as well. And I think I more than made for NYE 2007 with 2k8 and 2k9 (both in Austin).

    Two!?
Pre-emptive strike? Or just being greedy!? :)
  • I'm sure this year will be good. I get what you mean about the even numbers being good years. My fav years have been 2000,2002,2006,2008 lol. Bring on 2010!
  • Too funny! Your "coincidences" are certainly convincing!
Unfortunately for my, I spent the first few minutes of the new year crying because I got sentimental at the ball dropping and spending my first new year's alone in 7 years... I hope that doesn't mean I am going to have a sad year :(
  • ha! a hot guy or two. i wouldn't mind that! i think 2010 will be good.. plus its even :)
  • Happy New Year, Ari!

I'm sure this year will definitely be great for you.
  • Aw thanks! You too! :)

Maybe leaving early means you will always be on time to your appointments!

And I hope you do get the company of a gorgeous man or 3 ;)
  • Oooh I like that line of thinking. Good one!

    and thanks, lol 3!
  • Well.....I hope *he* comes along. Soon. :)

    You totally deserve it.
  • :) Thanks. I don't know what he's waiting for... *looks at watch* Taking forever!
  • 12:15 is leaving early? We left at the same time and, OMG, that was OHSOLATE. :)

    Happy New Year!
  • Lol! I suppose that's what happens when you have kids!

And happy new year to you too!
  • Oh! I'm first to comment on this! Awesome!

I'm supersitious about how I start off the New Year as well. In my family we don't clean on New Years Day because it means that we will spend the rest of the year cleaning, same for paying bills etc.

This year I wanted to keep the celebration to a minimum. I invited my sister, her hubby to be, my mom, my father in law, and our best friends over for a low key night. My mom made a greek casserole and we ordered pizza. At the stroke of midnight we all did the kissy kissy and toasted to 2010 with a glass of champagne! Then we cut a greek cake that has a coin in it for good luck! :)

Starting off your 2010 with friends is a reflection of how your year will be spent. You will be with friends enjoying yourself and their company and I'm sure by socializing more you can definitely find yourself a sexy man or two! :)

Wishing you a HAPPY GREAT PROSPEROUS New Year!
  • Oooh we have similar superstitions! And I like how you celebrated the new year - sounds perfect!
