Just snow already dangit!

Like most everywhere else in the world, Texas is experiencing a cold snap.  “Artic Blast” is what the news stations are using as their method of freaking people out. We’re looking at it getting in the 20s tonight, getting barely above freezing tomorrow and at one point they were saying the low tomorrow night could be 18.  (Ha, you didn’t expect to get the weather report when you clicked on my blog today, didja?)

Now, I know that other places are in the negative digits and quite frankly, I can’t wrap my head around that.  But, you have to realize… this is Texas.  South Texas.  We don’t get that cold.  And therefore, we’re not really prepared for this.  My jacket is pretty warm and all, but I don’t think it’s “not getting above 32 degrees” warm.  I have some sweaters, but not really thick, super warm sweaters.  And don’t even get me started about dismissal time tomorrow… I nearly froze today (my face didn’t feel normal for like 20 minutes after) and it was in the 40s.

But here’s what gets me… I think I would almost be okay with the cold weather… if it would snow.  I keep seeing pictures of snow and it’s so beautiful.  Yes, I’m sure it’s a hassle to drive in and gets annoying after a while.  But the new dSLR owner in me thinks “pictures!!”.   I mean, have you SEEN the pictures?  If I had all the snow some of these people are getting, I swear I’d never go inside… I’d be taking pictures til I ran out of space on the memory card!

Or until my fingers went numb.  And I realized that I was actually *freezing* and ‘omg-get-me-next-to-a-fireplace-NOW’.  Whichever comes first.

You know I’d even take some icicles.  Those have picture potential all over them.  Yes, ice is dangerous and all that.  But ice here = everything shutting down and pictures.  It’d be nice if we could get a little bit of ice.

But no, we get really really cold… and that’s it.  Grrr.  Bring on Spring dangit!

  • Hi Ari,

This is one time I can definitely say I am happier to be in Iraq instead of Texas. I was about 73 degrees here today :-) I'm still going to suffer for it a little bit though, when the heating bill comes. I talked to my wife yesterday, and she's got the thermostat at our Ft. Hood house up to 82.

p.s. really enjoying your 365 pictures so far.

I'm in the same boat - no warm clothes. And it snowed here!! A whole 1/2" shut down the entire tri-county area! It's lunch time here and the temp is 12 degrees!!! I have on so many layers that I l look like the little brother in "A Christmas Story" - its not even funny.

    I'm so ready for spring!
  • I'm with you all the way on this one. Freezing temps should ALWAYS translate into snow. No question.

It snowed here today. Not much, but the roads are all freezy so I didn't have to go to work!! ^_^

The secret to staying warm.... layers. Seriously. Forget the sweaters. Put on a tank top, a long sleeved shirt, a teeshirt, then a sweat shirt and your jacket and you will be fine.
  • I totally feel you--I live in Alabama, and it's supposed to drop down to 9 degrees Saturday! I'm not sure if I've ever experienced that low of a temp in my life!!!
I was reading your posts and noticed that you were a teacher. I am also a teacher--pre-k. I want you to know that I don't remember a day when I didn't come home complaining about something! Hope that makes you feel better!
  • Texas and I are in a love/hate relationship right now...It never...ever...snows and as soon as I move to another country it snows multiple times in one season....WHAT GIVES?!

Here in KS we're in the single digits (in the negatives tomorrow). I like to take pictures as well but it's SO COLD. I went and took pictures out in the snow one afternoon, and I didn't come in until the skin on my face was frozen—literally!
  • Lol! I too some snow pics in NYC that I have yet to edit and post, but I feel ya. It is freezing here in MIAMI! I mean we are as south as the US gets for crying out loud!
  • Three years ago I went to Chicago to visit my best friend. It snowed, and I loved it...

As I'm typing this, the current temperature is 62° but I would like it to be colder... meh...

Yeah I'm with you on that, bring on spring! I cannot take this weather anymore, the roads/pavements where I live aren't even gritted. I've slipped so many times :(
