Spoiler-free movie review: Avatar

[As always, my movie reviews are spoiler-free.  If you were looking for spoilers... sorry.  I'm sure you can find them if you look.]

I kind of resigned myself to not doing any more movie reviews, as I had decided that I’m not really good at writing them.  However, I really felt the need to write a review about this movie, mainly for the people that were like me – on the fence about seeing this movie, leaning towards the “eh it won’t be so good” side. So… here we go, for old times’ sake. :)

Yesterday I saw the movie Avatar with my brother and dad.  I have to start out by saying that I really didn’t care to see the movie. I mean, yes, I’d heard that it had already grossed a billion dollars worldwide, and that people were raving about the special effects… but I’m not really a person that cares about special effects.  Plus I had also heard that the plot was just eh, and usually I go to see a movie for the plot.

Obviously I went, mainly to see what the fuss was all about.  My brother (who had seen it once already) said that we HAD to see it at the IMAX in 3D… so we did.  At first it was difficult trying to buy the tickets online, because multiple showings were sold out.  Yes, this movie, that was released three weeks ago (December 18th) was still sold out in a few theaters, at many different times. Okay, now I HAD to see what the fuss was all about.  We got there early (another brother suggestion) and wow, am I glad we did… so many people had also gotten there early too.  I think if we would have gotten there 5 minutes later, we would have been stuck sitting right down at the front.  Yikes.  (So heads up… if you have plans to see it, get your tickets ahead of time, and get to the theater early.)

Anyway, on to the movie.  In a word, as my brother said, the movie was “pretty”.  I have to agree.  The special effects deserve all the hype; James Cameron went all out and spent so much money for a reason.  The world that he created is just so… amazing, almost magical.  The different creatures are spectacular to see, and the colors are so vivid, they made me wish I could be there.  And, while I’ve only seen it in IMAX 3D, I have to say that this must be the best way to see it.  The big screen, the 3D… it all just emphasizes the beauty of this film.

Btw, I have to say, I’m not usually a fan of 3D and this time my feelings were mixed.  On the one hand, yes, everything really does pop out at you (and the little girl next to me tried to reach out for something at one point during the movie… I actually almost wanted to at one point. Shut up, stop laughing.).  But on the other hand, and this is my general issue with 3D movies… at times, certain things seem almost transparent.  I mean, if the focus is the action in the middle of the screen, and there’s a character in the corner that you can almost see through, it doesn’t look as realistic as the rest of the picture. I don’t know.  I tried to explain it to my brother and my dad and they didn’t seem to really understand what I was saying.

Now, as I’ve said already – people have said that the plot wasn’t that great.  I don’t know about that.  From my viewpoint (and I guess I’m not being all that critical), I thought the plot was decent.  There WAS a reason for them being on the planet, there was a story to tell, rather than it just being all about the special effects.  Not only that, but there was a message and I really felt it, it really got to me and made me emotional.  It really made me think about what we do on a regular basis, without even thinking twice, and how it affects everything else.

What else can I say about this movie?  It had quite a bit of action, and at the end of the movie I felt exhausted – I was very “into” the fighting and at times I found myself holding my breath.  There were some parts that had me nervous (in that “something is about to jump out at me” way), but that may be just because I’m a scaredy cat. There was a bit of comedy, which had the audience laughing aloud.  And of course, a bit of romance too… basically it had something for everyone.

Oh yeah, and btw… it’s a long movie. About 2 and a half hours. And honestly?  It felt long at times.  I checked my watch quite a bit, more than I usually do during a movie.  I think a few scenes could have been made shorter, but at the same time, at the end I was surprised to find it over.  I didn’t want to leave the world James Cameron had created.

And, on that note, I will say that I kind of want to see it again already.  If anyone lives near me and wants to go… let’s go!  I definitely think I’ll buy it on DVD (although I’m sure it won’t be the same experience as IMAX 3D)… and if there’s a sequel, I’ll be there.

So, in the end, I have to give this movie a good review… let’s say 4 1/2 stars out of 5 (minus half a star for it feeling long, and for an annoying character that was just overly evil). I’m sure there are people that will disagree with me, as there always is… and, who knows… maybe I just liked it because I wasn’t expecting much.  But it’s nice to be pleasantly surprised by a movie, it’s nice to walk out of the theater wanting more… and the next day, all of it (the special effects, the characters, the plot) is still on my mind.  That’s what I consider a pretty good movie-going experience. :)

Have you seen Avatar?  Do you have any additional thoughts you’d like to leave?  And, if you haven’t seen it already… are you planning on going?

    Nice review. :)
Who knows if I'll get to go see it. It'd be nice to see it on 3D.
Will let you know if I do go.
  • This is one movie that I have no desire to see. And I can't even tell you why! LOL My teen loved it though. He couldn't stop talking about it when he got home from the theater!

    Coming over from SITS! WELCOME!
  • Thanks for the review, T wants to go and see it and like you I'm not too bothered about it but I'm interested to see what the 3D thing is like so maybe we will go. Thanks for the lovely comment on my painting the other day - and for the record your photo taking is beautiful and always inspires me to keep going with mine, and keep learning how to make it better.
  • I totally agree. I went to see what all the hype was about, and I too saw it in IMAX 3D, and was impressed. More so than I have been with most movies lately. For me, it didn't seem long and I loved the world he created too :)

    Totally reccomend!
  • Thank you for your spoiler free review. I wanted to go see it when it first came out, despite how predictable the plot looked. Then everyone was uber excited about it, and I lost interest. That's how I roll.

Now? I'm excited again! I can take a bit of watch checking if the images are that gorgeous. Love Love Love!

I really enjoyed it! I am going again with the BF to see it in Imax 3D the first time we saw it on a regular screen, but I agree, it definitely should be seen on the imax screen. I cried twice. The world is so beautiful. I want to live there.

The story was packed with so many social and economic commentary and it may take 2 or 3 viewings to really catch it all.

good job on reviewing without giving anything away!
  • I saw Avatar, not in 3D since I have bad eyesight and that messes with my eyes. I wish my eyes weren't crappy but either way I liked the movie. It was a bit long, but I went in fully expecting it to be that way...COME ON...it's JAMES CAMERON. The man can't make a short movie.
  • Nice review, in my opinion Avatar is one of the few movies to fully back up the media attention and hype it has recieved, and has set the standard for the future of modern cinema.

Whilst the narrative may be nothing new, and it isn't, it is the stunning visual that this movie delivers that makes Avatar so good. It also proves that a simple narrative can be recycled and reused if it is delivered in a fresh and exciting way.

If anyone reading this review has yet to see Avatar, go and catch it in the cinema - and don't miss it in 3D!

Like most people, I think a stunning world was created... 3D enhances even this. Call me post-modern, but I really like plots that are difficult to predict and slightly absurd, so the film wasn't really exceptional in this regard. Some of the dialog was annoying too.

But you know what, I'm going to watch it once more in big, loud, hopefully empty theater!
  • I want to see it! Had wanted to see it in 3D buuuuuut could be a bad idea. I get motion sickness from movies. Real bad
  • I've just seen this yesterday, and I agree it's very pretty! I think some people thought the plot was too similar to 'Dancing with Wolves', but I think it's a plot that everyone can learn from.
  • Yeah I've heard that (that it's similar with Dances with Wolves) but I've never seen that, lol. Maybe I ought to now!
  • I did enjoy watching Avatar in 3D IMAX, and i really was a spectacle. But I'm not sure if I would have the same reaction in seeing it at a regular cinema (or at home on TV).

The film did strike me as being a bit like Dances with Wolves, but (obviously) in space and sometimes I did feel there was a sense of "look what we can do". But it was a very good interpretation of an alien world. Certainly one of the best I can remember for a long time.

Not my genre of movie, no plans to see it. Daughter saw it and didn't care for it.

    Welcome to SITS!

I'm like you, I'm kinda on the fence about this one. I think I'd like to see what it's all about for myself.
  • Good review. I saw Avatar like you, on Imax 3d. My husband lied to me about how long it was so that I'd agree to see it.

In the end, I think it was a worthy use of 2.5 hrs. The plot, in my opinion, was one of the oldest stories on the planet - Romeo and Juliet - and usually, I'd say "I'VE HEARD THIS ONE BEFORE!" It's not that the plot wasn't good - it's a GREAT story anytime someone tells it - but how many times do we need to hear it?

Enter Avatar - ONLY if seen in 3d - and you've got your answer. This film, in my opinion, showed us that 3d doesn't have to be gimmicky. From the restraint used (no arrows shot at us, 3d was never used to cause one to jump out of their seat) to the shooting style and perspectives used, we experienced the film as if we were walking through it. I thought some of the most impacting scenes were the ones where something very normal was happening - walking through the lab, standing in the middle of the Navee council - because you were simply given dimension where previously, there was none. You were there.

I hope that other film makes take note of this idea of dimension as a way to get people back in theaters, but only for certain films - I do not want to see " It's Complicated" in 3d, if you get what I'm saying ;D
  • Nice review. By seeing the trailers, it does look like a cool movie. I'd probably go see it this weekend... depends on the projects...

It's a bummer I don't live in your city, it'd be cool to go see it with you.

A bit off topic, the movies I want to see are Daybreakers, Legion, The Book of Eli, and The Lovely Bones.
