Oh hello beautiful.

So I mentioned yesterday that I’ve been ordering stuff for my project 365.  Well today one of my most highly anticipated items arrived…. my new 50mm f/1.8 lens.  *\o/* Hooray!

It’s also the very first lens (besides the kit lens that came with the D90) that I ordered so it was especially exciting.  I had planned on waiting for a while before buying lenses, but I kept seeing the 50mm pop up on flickr and it just looked so fabulous.  I couldn’t resist.  I also had no idea what I was doing: I put the lens on and could not get the auto-focus to work.  Turns out when I put the lens on, I didn’t rotate it all the way (so that it clicked), so it couldn’t auto-focus.  Then heavens for someone on twitter helping me out!

Oh and cute sidebar… yesterday my kids saw me get a box that had Wall-E in it.  When they saw me with a box today, they asked “is that Eve?”  If you’ve seen the movie, you know how freaking cute that is.

Anyway, I KNOW I’ll be using this lens a lot but here are a few shots that I took, just playing around with it.  Nothing special so I didn’t put them up on flickr, but I felt they were blog-worthy.

PhotobucketOoooh… pretty bokeh!

PhotobucketI just like how crisp the shot of the blue stamper is… odd, I know.

PhotobucketOkay is it just me or is this shot kinda neat?  Something about the focus and the tilt gets to me.  Btw, those kids in the background… not my class.  That’s the yoga after school club that uses my room, I don’t teach them.

PhotobucketLol, weird shot, but I just like the crisp focus on the white truck.  And plus now you can see how much gas cost on January 13, 2010. :)

The kinda crummy thing is that I’ll probably have to keep my new love affair hush hush for a while… I haven’t told my parents I got it.  I told my dad I wanted a macro lens the other day (actually a filter, but I still want the lens) and he said I should learn about what I have first before getting new things.  And I know he has a point.  But when I found that really good deal on this refurbished lens, I couldn’t resist.  And I totally don’t regret buying it, not one bit.

somehow i missed this post. but did see you got the lens on your flickr. this 50mm will bring you to another level. the sigma 105mm is an amazing macro lens when the time comes. of course the nikon 105 is superior, but its also 900.00!! ugh. I wish I had kept my old 105 rather than sell it to my second shooter. nice job on the shots. I love seeing your excitement. its inspiring to me!
  • Super cool!! That's a very cool lens, indeed. Congrats!

Is it a Nikkor, Sigma, Tokina... Tamron?

Whatever brand it is, you did well in buying it. :)

Gee, gas sure is cheap in TX... I wish it was that cheap here in CA...

  • Looks like fun and I'm looking forward to seeing what else you do with it. I'm still using the basic lens that came with my DSLR.
  • Hey my basic lens is pretty awesome, I know I'll use it a lot. But this one is awesome too, in a unique way.
  • Lol! I'm guessing your parents don't read your blog?

Have fun...the camera body is nice, but the glass is more important. And blurry backgrounds are awesome, but I love the 1.8 even more for the ability to take low light photos without a flash.

    Congrats!
  • Ha ha most definitely not! And yes, the ability to take low light pics without a flash is something I noticed this morning... and completely awesome!

MMMMmmm...I just steal my dad's. I use a D70, and he uses a D200 - the lenses are interchangable. He needs a macro lens for his work (he's an engineer), so I steal it from time to time. Along with his zoom. And wide-angle. And maybe a few other things.
  • Lol, that reminds of my dad... he has an Olympus and really wanted me to get one, mainly so he could let me use his lenses. However, he would've made me buy them from him.

You're lucky you can use your dad's lenses... I would kill to get to use a macro lens!
  • New toys are always fun!

Also, I truly enjoy your pictures. Even the ones you think are bad
  • Congrats on the new lens! I really like the 3rd picture too :)
  • 50mm primes rock the world. Although I am sooo wanting a 35mm prime right now (since we have crop sensors, 35mm works out to be like a 50mm on a SLR, but anyway)...

My 50mm f/1.4 didn't leave my camera in the entire time we were in the hospital. It was a great lens for taking pictures in the operating room as well as the NICU where I did NOT want to use a flash.
  • Gas is way more expensive here
  • I love the crisp blue stamper, and FOCUS AND TILT! Love fest!!!

Your dad will cope. Don't stress about it. ^_^

Great pics. Can definitely see straight away the 50mm goodness. You'll do wonders with it. Don't forget your other lens! Or sell it and get a zoom. :)
  • Sell it? Surely you must be joking!

Macro lens is next on the list. :p
