My own personal soundtrack

I have this big playlist of songs on my iPod (ok technically iPhone) that I’ve had for years now, that I just keep adding on to.   It’s not a playlist that I listen to often, usually just when I’m driving long distances, but for whatever reason I decided to flick through it today. And what I found kind of made me laugh.  Because the playlist has apparently become a soundtrack for the past few years of my life.

You see, I have this habit of getting addicted and obsessed with a new song.  Once I hear it on the radio, I’ll look for it, download it and then play it over and over again for a few days.  Then I get sick of it.  I’m sure I’m not the only person that does this… I hope not anyway!

The first song that I heard (not the first one on the playlist) was “Welcome to the World” by Kevin Rudolph (all links go to youtube).  And what instantly popped into my head was Lush bubble baths.  Bizarre, right?  I guess that song was on a playlist that I listened to when I got my first Lush products. Ahhh.

Next memory came courtesy of  “Falling Down” by Duran Duran.  It reminded me of the long drives to visit a guy I was dating.  “Kids” by MGMT reminds me of my cousin who I visited in Oregon back in August… it was on HER iPhone playlist whenever we were driving around so we heard it often.  “The Way I Are” by Timbaland reminds me of SeaWorld – I worked there one summer and had to walk a good 15 minutes to get from the parking lot to the swimming pool (I was a lifeguard).

There are others, many others – the playlist is over 3 hours long now.   Such a random collection of songs (yes, I’m sure there will be plenty of mocking in the comments) and such a random collection of memories.  It makes me smile.

And then there’s “Ride” by Cary Brothers.  That song is tied to so many memories… hearing it on the TV show Scrubs, dancing around to it in various apartments, listening to it in the car of a guy who put it on a mixed CD for me… I could go on.   If I had a soundtrack to my life, “Ride” would be the finale.  And I would STILL listen to it over and over again. :)

I love "Ride" So much. I have a soundtrack much like yours... and sometimes it's painful to listen to!!
  • 3hrs is a long time, but perfect for driving! I love going back in time like this, and hearing music that I might have obsessed over for a while...sometimes start obsessing over it again. Music is life.

I have one too . . . its long and ecclectic. I need to sit down and put it all together in iTunes - it would definately be interesting to listen to! Currently I have a playlist for a every year since I turned 20.
  • I'm totally the same about downloading a new song and listening to it over and over. It drives my family insane!

I love coming across an old song and having random memories suddenly come into the forefront of my mind. It's so awesome that music can do that sometimes.
  • I totally do the same things with songs AND movies. I literally play them on repeat until I can't stand them anymore.

It's so neat to have a "soundtrack" to your life like this. I have similar collection of mix CD's that are labeled by the month date I made them. It's always a trip down memory lane to pop one in.
  • The only song I know is "Ride" by the Cary Brothers. That's thanks to Garden State, Zach Braff and Scrubs

    Nice.
Why don't you put the full list somewhere? I don't know a couple of the songs you mentioned.
But most definitely, music marks a soundtrack to your life. You could imagine the range of music I'd have... ah... 80s music. :)
Go on, give us more examples. :)
